What happened

Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord won the Palme d’Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, his second after 2007.

Fjord won the Palme d’Or, the top prize at Cannes, on . Cristian Mungiu’s drama follows a Romanian family of Evangelical Christians caught in a child-abuse case inside the Norwegian social system. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve star.

Mungiu is the tenth director to win the prize twice. His first win came 19 years earlier, in 2007, with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

Neon, a US company that releases independent films in American cinemas, has now handled seven Palme d’Or winners in a row. The run began with Parasite in 2019 and went on through Titane, Triangle of Sadness, Anatomy of a Fall, Anora and It Was Just an Accident. Two of them, Parasite and Anora, later won the Oscar for Best Picture.

The jury also gave prizes to Minotaur, The Black Ball and Fatherland. For Fjord, the next step is the autumn festivals. Neon’s Palme winners usually play festivals in September and October, and their US cinema dates are announced over the summer. The autumn festivals start naming their films in late July.

The Pattern

Ten directors have won the Palme d’Or twice in 79 festivals. We looked at the five most recent. The gap between their two wins ran from three to 19 years, so the prize tends to come back to a director late.

Ten directors have won twice in 79 editions of the festival — a 13% incidence across its whole history. But the club is compounding: three of the ten doubles landed in the last 15 years, as juries increasingly return to established auteurs rather than crown new ones.

The Read

History points to an autumn festival, then a US release. Neon has handled its Palme winners the same way since Parasite. The film plays the autumn festivals, where awards campaigns begin, and then opens in a small number of US cinemas in late September or October. Anatomy of a Fall and Anora both opened in US cinemas in October of their Cannes year, with dates set over the summer.

The risk is timing. Palme winners sometimes skip the festivals that name their films early. Telluride keeps its list secret until late August and has become Neon’s favourite first stop in the US. If Fjord goes to Telluride first, the festival market resolves NO, even if the film later plays every big autumn festival. Neon has also set some US dates late. Titane’s date was fixed close to release, and a busy awards autumn could push Fjord to November or to a slow international release in 2027.

The Toronto festival names its main films in late July and the New York Film Festival follows in early August. Those announcements, with Venice, will answer the festival market before .
