Why these numbers

History. 2 of 7: of the seven coaches still in charge in late October, Tudor (27 October) and Di Matteo (21 November) were sacked by late November; Roeder went in May, and Mihajlovic, Inzaghi, Stramaccioni and Coleman kept their jobs. De Rossi, Mendilibar and Shakespeare had gone before late October.

Hunch. On 22 October club sources told the BBC that United have already begun identifying possible replacements for Carrick.

How this resolves

The Carrick market resolves on Manchester United's official news: YES if before 16:30 UK time on 22 November 2026, the kick-off of Liverpool against United, the club says Carrick is no longer head coach, whether sacked, leaving by agreement or resigning, and NO if he is still in the job then. BBC Sport and Guardian reports settle it if the club page is silent, and the deadline does not move if the game does.

The pattern behind it

6 of 10
Six of ten coaches made permanent between seasons after a spell in temporary charge were sacked during the next season. Of the seven still in charge in late October, two went by late November.

We looked for cases where a club in one of Europe’s five biggest leagues gave its head coach the job for good between seasons, after a spell in temporary charge. We found ten such coaches from 2003 to 2025, in England, Italy and Spain. Each time we checked whether the club sacked him during the next season.
