Why these numbers

History. 4 of 5: the move happened and no new later date was named (Eastbourne 2013, Banbury 2016, Elgin 2018, Barnstaple 2026); Glan Clwyd 2015 did not move. Counting only moves made by the first date named: 2 of 5, or 3 of 5 if Banbury's first date is taken as 'from October'.

Hunch. On 3 November the trust said its staff are already calling women due to give birth on or after 23 November, and by the end of the month it will have only two of the eight permanent senior doctors it needs.

How this resolves

The birth move market resolves on the Southern Trust's Maternity Updates page: YES if by the end of 23 November 2026 the trust says births and care for women in labour at Daisy Hill Hospital have stopped and moved to Craigavon Area Hospital, and NO if a court has ordered a delay, the trust has moved the date past 23 November, or Daisy Hill is still taking births that day. A rare birth in the Daisy Hill emergency department does not change a YES, and BBC News NI confirms the result, with The Irish News and then the Belfast Telegraph as backup if the trust page is silent.

The pattern behind it

4 of 5
Four of five times a UK health body named a date to move births away from a hospital for lack of doctors, the move happened with no new date. Once, in North Wales in 2015, the date passed and the plan was dropped.

We looked for cases where a UK health body planned to move births away from one of its hospitals because it could not hire enough doctors, and named a date at least a week ahead. We found five since 2013, in England, Scotland and Wales. In four the move went ahead with no new date. Once the plan was dropped.
