Why these numbers

Hunch. Czech trade minister Karel Havlíček told Politico, in a report of 13 October, that one year is not enough and the whole law-making process is still ahead.

How this resolves

The methane delay market resolves on EUR-Lex, the EU's official record of laws: YES if an act of the Parliament and the Council delaying the import rules of the methane law is published in the Official Journal dated 31 December 2026 or earlier, and NO if not, including a later publication that applies backwards. Council press releases and Politico Europe settle it if EUR-Lex cannot be opened.

The pattern behind it

8 of 9
Eight of nine times the Commission proposed less than three months ahead to delay an EU law's start, the delay was published before the old date. Once, in 2018, it came 24 days late.

We looked for cases where the European Commission proposed to delay the start of an EU law less than three months before that start. We checked whether the delay was published in the Official Journal before the old date. We found nine such delays from 2013 to 2025. Eight were published in time.
