Why these numbers

History. 4 of 10: Ne Zha 2, Pushpa 2, Singham Again and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle opened at 3.3 to 7.6 times the first film's opening weekend; $28M is 2.45 times Minus One's $11,419,975.

Hunch. Godzilla Minus One kept selling for months after its December 2023 opening and finished at five times its opening weekend, more than any first film among the ten.

How this resolves

The $28 million market resolves on Box Office Mojo, which shows actual North American takings for Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November 2026 on Monday 9 November: YES if the opening weekend, with any Thursday previews counted in Friday, is $28 million or more, with exactly $28 million counting as YES, and NO if it is less. Deadline and Variety confirm the figure, and if Box Office Mojo shows none, the final weekend figures on The Numbers settle it.

The pattern behind it

4 of 10
Four of ten times a sequel to a film not in English opened at 2.45 times the first film's opening or more, and six times it opened lower.

We looked for cases where a film in a language other than English got a sequel that opened in at least 600 cinemas in North America, and the first film had also played there. We found ten such sequels from 2021 to 2026. For each one we compared the sequel's first Friday-to-Sunday weekend with the first film's.
