Why these numbers

History. 7 of 10 sequels opened bigger than the first film; My Hero Academia: You're Next, Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two and the Slime sequel opened smaller.

Hunch. Godzilla Minus One finished at five times its opening weekend, and the three sequels that opened smaller than the first film all followed films that grew far less.

How this resolves

The Minus One market resolves on Box Office Mojo on Monday 9 November 2026: YES if Godzilla Minus Zero takes more than $11,419,975 from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November, the opening weekend of Godzilla Minus One, and NO if it takes that or less. Studio estimates on Sunday do not count, and Deadline and Variety reports settle it if Box Office Mojo shows no figure.

The pattern behind it

4 of 10
Four of ten times a sequel to a film not in English opened at 2.45 times the first film's opening or more, and six times it opened lower.

We looked for cases where a film in a language other than English got a sequel that opened in at least 600 cinemas in North America, and the first film had also played there. We found ten such sequels from 2021 to 2026. For each one we compared the sequel's first Friday-to-Sunday weekend with the first film's.
