Resolved: YES
On 16 September 2026 the Prime Minister's Office published a gov.uk press release on McLaren's investment, now given as about £500m including Woking, and BBC News reported that ministers Jonathan Reynolds and Louise Haigh visited the Woking site with the Prime Minister that day.

How this resolves
The ministerial market resolves YES if a UK government department publishes a press release, speech or ministerial statement naming McLaren's £450m Woking investment on gov.uk on or before 9 October, or if a named minister visits the site and the visit is reported by the BBC and the Guardian. A passing reference to McLaren in an unrelated document does not count, and if gov.uk has published nothing the Guardian and BBC reports settle it.
The pattern behind it
6 of 8
Six of the last eight comparable pledges drew a public government mark within 30 days, and every one of those six arrived on the day of the announcement rather than later. The two that drew nothing were Rolls-Royce's £300m at Goodwood in January 2025 and Jaguar Land Rover's £15bn plan in April 2023, both funded by foreign parents with no UK public money attached. On the full record of eleven since July 2021, nine were marked; the three older additions were Britishvolt's Blyth gigaplant and Bentley's £2.5bn at Crewe in January 2022 and Stellantis's £100m at Ellesmere Port in July 2021, each welcomed by a business secretary on the day. What the marks did not buy was delivery: Britishvolt collapsed into administration within a year, Stellantis closed its Luton van plant in 2024, Tata's Somerset gigafactory waited until April 2026 for its £380m grant and remains a steel frame, Bentley cut 275 jobs in March 2026, and JLR is now cutting 4,000.
Every government welcome we found came on the day itself. We looked at each UK car or battery plant investment of £100m or more that a company announced since July 2021. For each we asked whether a named minister or a government department welcomed it in public within 30 days, through a gov.uk press release, a visit or a named statement. The page shows the latest eight, newest first.
