Why these numbers

History. 5 of 6: the government ended the contract at Sellafield 2015, probation 2018, ScotRail 2019, AWE 2020 and Caledonian Sleeper 2022; it extended Sellafield in 2013.

Hunch. Health minister James Frith wrote on 21 August that a new contract was unlikely to be ready by March if the government left Palantir.

How this resolves

The contract market resolves on GOV.UK and Contracts Finder: YES if by 15 February 2027 the Department of Health and Social Care or NHS England announces that the Federated Data Platform contract with Palantir will not be extended or is ended as a whole, even with an exit period to move to another system. An extension or a new end date without a decision to end resolves NO, the market is void if neither comes by 15 February, and BBC News and The Guardian settle it if the official pages are silent.

The pattern behind it

5 of 6
Five of six times a UK government could end a private contract early without the company being at fault, it ended it. Once, at Sellafield in 2013, it extended the contract.

We looked for cases where a UK government or one of its agencies had the right to end a contract with a private company early, without the company being at fault, and had to choose whether to use it. We found six such decisions in Britain from 2013 to 2022. Five times the government ended the contract, and once it kept the company on.
