Why these numbers

History. 1 of 8. We looked at eight UK schemes that ran out of money before the round was meant to end. Only once did the next budget decision add new money: the home insulation fund in 2014.

Hunch.

  • For: Farm and nature groups are asking for more money, and the Commons returns on 12 October.
  • Against: The Treasury has added nothing to this round; the £50m in August was moved from other farm spending.
  • Against: The farm budget is fixed until 2028-29.
  • Against: The farmers' union asks the Budget for tax changes, not money for this scheme.
How this resolves

The Budget market resolves on the Budget 2026 documents on GOV.UK: YES if the Budget of 28 October 2026 or its policy costings show new spending, above the Spending Review 2025 settlement, for the Sustainable Farming Incentive, Countryside Stewardship or other Environmental Land Management schemes, for any year. Money moved inside Defra's existing budget, tax reliefs, loans and drought or disease payments do not count; if the documents are unclear, a Treasury or Defra statement on GOV.UK settles it, with BBC News and the Guardian as backup.

The pattern behind it

1 of 8
In 1 of 8 UK cases did the next budget decision add new money for a scheme that ran out early.

We found eight UK cases since 1984 where the fixed money for a regular grant scheme ran out long before its round was meant to end, leaving many people who qualified without help. They are farm schemes and home energy grants. In each we asked two things. Did the next Budget put in new money? And was the next round less generous? New money came once. Most next rounds were smaller, had lower limits or did not come at all.
