History. 0 of 4: no ban in the base was narrowed or started only in part before its day; outside the count, Scotland 2022 started in part.
Hunch. The rules on how shops check a buyer's date of birth were put before Parliament on 14 September and still need a vote in both the Commons and the Lords.
The weakening market resolves on GOV.UK and legislation.gov.uk: YES if by 31 December 2026 the government makes, lays or announces a change that narrows the ban from 1 January 2027, such as exemptions for some products or buyers, a start in only part of the UK or a new birth-date limit. A moved start date counts only in the start market, approving the age-check rules is not a narrowing, and BBC News and The Guardian are the backup.
We looked for cases where the UK, or one of its nations, banned the sale of a product and wrote the start date into the law at least eight months ahead. We found four such bans set from 2010 to 2019, and all four started on the day written in the law. None was moved or narrowed first.
