Why these numbers

Hunch. A Trump administration official confirmed after the ruling that there are no immediate plans to pay back the money already spent.

How this resolves

The repayment market resolves on statements at whitehouse.gov: YES if by the end of 3 November 2026 Trump, his administration, his campaign or a party committee confirm that any part of the money already spent on the ads has been paid back to the government, as reported by Reuters or the BBC. A promise to pay for future ads resolves NO.

The pattern behind it

4 of 5
Four of five short court orders stopping US government spending were extended or made longer by the same court. In 2021 the judge ended his order because another court had already banned the payments.

We looked for cases where a US federal court used a short order to stop the government spending or paying out federal money. We found five such orders from 2021 to 2026. Three were about Joe Biden's plans to cancel student debt. Two of the five were pauses by an appeals court, a different kind of order from Judge Rochon's.
