Why these numbers

History. 0 of 9: in none of the nine did a big rival from the same country follow within 90 days; the three followers (ING twice, Lloyds once) were from another country.

Hunch. HSBC, Banco Santander, Lloyds and NatWest all report results between 27 and 30 October, within days of Barclays.

How this resolves

The UK bank market resolves on the banks' own results and statements from 22 October to 19 November 2026: YES if Lloyds Banking Group, HSBC, NatWest Group, Santander UK, Nationwide or Standard Chartered announces new job cuts of any size and itself names AI or automation among the reasons. The announcing bank's own site settles it, with BBC News or Reuters as backup, and cuts from a plan set out before 22 October, or linked to AI only by journalists or unions, do not count.

The pattern behind it

3 of 9
In three of nine times since 2014, a big firm's job cuts linked to new technology were followed within 90 days by a rival in the same industry, always from another country. Six times none followed.

We looked for cases where a big firm announced at least 1,000 job cuts at once and itself named a new technology among the reasons, such as online banking, automation or AI. We found nine such job cuts from 2014 to 2026, six of them at banks. Each time we checked whether another big firm in the same industry announced cuts for the same reason within 90 days.
