Why these numbers

History. 3 of 9: after Lloyds 2014 and Commerzbank 2016, ING followed; after ING 2016, Lloyds followed; each follower was from another country, after 4, 9 and 28 days.

Hunch. The BBC reported on 22 October that Danske Bank has already linked job cuts to AI this year.

How this resolves

The bank abroad market resolves YES if, from 22 October to 19 November 2026, a bank based outside the UK that is among the biggest in its country or has tens of thousands of staff announces new job cuts and itself names AI or automation among the reasons. The announcing bank's own site settles it, with BBC News or Reuters as backup, and Banco Santander counts here except for cuts announced by Santander UK.

The pattern behind it

3 of 9
In three of nine times since 2014, a big firm's job cuts linked to new technology were followed within 90 days by a rival in the same industry, always from another country. Six times none followed.

We looked for cases where a big firm announced at least 1,000 job cuts at once and itself named a new technology among the reasons, such as online banking, automation or AI. We found nine such job cuts from 2014 to 2026, six of them at banks. Each time we checked whether another big firm in the same industry announced cuts for the same reason within 90 days.
