Hunch. Wales beat Albania 4-0 in Wrexham and 1-0 in Albania this year, five goals to none over two matches (BBC Sport, 30 Jun 2026).
Resolves on the UEFA match records of both matches: YES if Wales go through and have scored at least three more goals than Albania over the two matches, extra time included. Penalty shoot-out goals do not count. Albania going through resolves NO. BBC Sport is the backup.
We looked for cases where a British team ranked at least 20 places higher played a knockout tie in qualifying for the World Cup or the Euros, since the world rankings began. Men and women are counted together. We found six, from 2020 to 2026. The higher-ranked team went through in five. Four of the six were a single match, not two. The only exit was Wales men against Bosnia and Herzegovina in March 2026, on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Cardiff.
