Barcelona bid for Julián Álvarez, Atlético say no. Such stars usually stayed put.
Atlético Madrid rejected bids of over €100m from Real Madrid and Barcelona for Julián Álvarez. His release clause is €500m. Barcelona's offer stands.
What happened
Barcelona refuse to give up on Julián Álvarez and could raise their bid to around €130m plus bonuses after the World Cup, despite Atlético Madrid’s refusal to sell and relations between the clubs at an all-time low.
Atlético Madrid have turned down Spain’s two biggest clubs. Real Madrid’s €150m (£129m) offer for their striker Julián Álvarez was rejected on . Atlético replied on X: “You make us laugh even more than Barcelona”.
Barcelona then made a firm offer of more than €100m. Club president Joan Laporta said it “remains on the table and the deal could still go through, but the offer is not open-ended”.
Atlético say they will “neither study nor consider” any offer. Álvarez is under contract until 2030 and has a €500m (£431m) release clause, the fee that, if paid in full, lets a player leave without his club’s agreement.
Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are also watching, but Álvarez and his family are reported to prefer staying in Spain. Laporta says Atlético’s refusal depends on a replacement: “Atlético said no because they didn’t have a replacement. If they get one, we will see”.
Álvarez is due to take a holiday after Argentina’s World Cup, then return to Atlético for pre-season training. That is when any private request to leave would come out.

The Pattern
Since 2013, clubs have publicly declared six star players not for sale during a transfer window while rich clubs chased them. We looked at how those standoffs ended. The newest come first.

The Read
The case for a move is real. Barcelona’s offer is formal and still stands, and Laporta says Atlético’s refusal depends on finding a replacement. Álvarez, who Laporta says has wanted the move since his Manchester City days, goes back to a club that has just mocked his suitors in public. If he asks to leave in pre-season and Atlético find a striker, the refusal could soften quickly. Sky reports Barcelona are ready with €130m plus bonuses once the World Cup ends.
History points the other way. In six similar standoffs, no club was talked down from a public not-for-sale position in the same window. The only two players who moved went because the buyer paid the full release clause, and Álvarez’s clause is €500m, far more than any fee paid in these cases.
Atlético have attacked both bidders in public, which makes backing down before August costly for them, and Álvarez himself has not pushed to leave. That is why our market gives a Barcelona announcement within 17 days only 16 per cent. A request to leave from Álvarez, or Atlético signing another striker, would change that.
