What happened
England beat India by four wickets at Old Trafford, chasing 191 with six balls to spare; Jacob Bethell finished unbeaten on 76 from 46.
India made 190 for 7, led by Ishan Kishan’s 49 and Abhishek Sharma’s 43. Arshdeep Singh then took three wickets for 40 runs to keep England under pressure. England still got home with six balls to spare, and Jacob Bethell was named player of the match.
Two overs decided the chase. With England needing 49 from the last four overs, Bethell hit Ravi Bishnoi over the leg side three times in the 17th over. That over cost India 29 runs and included two no-balls, after an earlier over had already gone for 27.
The first game of the series, at Chester-le-Street on , was washed out with no result.
Three T20 games remain in six days. They are at Trent Bridge on , Bristol on and Southampton on . A three-match one-day series follows at Edgbaston, Cardiff and Lord’s from 14 to . Shreyas Iyer captains India in the T20 games, and Shubman Gill takes over for the one-day games.

The Pattern
India won both T20 series they played in England. We looked at every T20 contest between the two sides in England since 2011, counting a one-off game or a full series as one contest. England won the two one-off games, in 2011 and 2014. India won the series in 2018 and 2022, and in 2018 they did it after England had won the first completed game.

The Read
History leans to India. Both times India played a full T20 series in England, they lost a game and still won the series, and the 2018 tour also began with an England win. This is the first five-match series between the two sides in England, and a longer series is the format in which India have done better.
England’s case is the lead and the chase. At 1-0 down, India must win most of the remaining games. England chased down 191 without their top batters at their best, and Bethell showed the calm of a Test player as a finisher. They also play at home, in front of home crowds, with rested fast bowlers across three grounds in six days.
The win at Old Trafford was narrow. It turned on one over from Bishnoi with no-balls, and India still made 190 with two senior players missing. Our market gives England 57 per cent and treats the lead as decisive. In the past, this was the point where India started to win. The series ends at Southampton on .
