What happened

Google’s Gemini 3.5 Pro launch has been delayed again, with the model falling short of internal goals and the flagship now months behind schedule.

Gemini 3.5 Pro, Google’s top AI model, was first planned for early summer. The launch has been pushed back several times. By mid-July it was reported to be months behind schedule, because its performance fell short of Google’s own targets.

Google has kept releasing other models. Gemini 3.5 Flash, the smaller model in the same family, became generally available, meaning open to all, on , and developers are using it. The Pro model, which carries Google’s top claims, is still in limited preview.

The question now is whether the top model arrives this summer. Google marks general availability with an entry in its own release notes. Until that entry appears, the top place in the family is empty.

The Pattern

Google’s past AI delays rarely lasted more than three months. We looked at times when Google delayed, paused or mishandled a major AI release, and checked whether the product came out or came back within about three months of its original target. The delays were real and sometimes embarrassing. The loss of top researchers is newer and less tested.

3 of 4
In three of the four episodes on this page Google shipped or restored the product within roughly a quarter of its original target: Bard six weeks after the demo error in 2023, Gemini 1.0 Ultra inside a quarter later that year, and image generation within weeks in 2024. Four cases on the page, four in the record. The fourth case is the 2021 departure of a lead researcher, kept because it is the only precedent for the talent variable, and scored not-held because no shipping followed from it.
2024 Google, Gemini imagesheld
Google paused Gemini’s image generation after historical-figure diversity errors, then restored the feature within weeks rather than quarters.
2023 Google, Gemini 1.0 Ultraheld
Gemini 1.0 Ultra slipped past its initial window and a launch demo video was found to be edited, yet Ultra still shipped within a quarter.

2023 Google, Bardheld
A factual error in the Bard launch demo wiped roughly $100 billion off Alphabet’s market value in a single session. Google had announced Bard in February and. (<a href=”https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/mar/21/googles-bard-chatbot-launches-in-us-and-uk”>opened it to users in the US and UK on about six weeks later (The Guardian, 21 Mar 2023</a>)
2021 Google, Noam Shazeernot held
Transformer co-author Noam Shazeer left Google to found Character.AI, only to return in 2024 through a deal reportedly worth around $2.7 billion.

The Read

The July question is nearly settled and the September one is not. Two weeks is too little time to close a gap that Google’s own people describe as falling short of internal goals, which is why the July market opens low. For September, history helps. In every clear case here Google closed the gap within three months of admitting it, and it is still releasing models in the same family, with Flash fully available since May.

The weak point has no earlier example. Leaving the top model missing while smaller ones ship is a different failure from a paused feature or an edited demo video. The 2021 case shows that the people who close such gaps can leave. If the fixes hide a deeper problem, the delay will run past September, and a record of three clear cases will meet one it cannot explain.
