Why these numbers

Hunch. If Manchester City lose points this season, the table could spread out and the title could be settled early.

How this resolves

The last day market resolves on the table before kick-off of the round 38 games on 30 May 2027: YES if one club has already made the title certain on points, and NO if the title is settled in the last round. If the season is cancelled, the market is void.

The pattern behind it

3 of 9
Three of nine times the champions were level at the top after eight games, with another club close behind on a winning run, they won the league again, and six times they lost it.

We looked for cases where the champions of one of the five biggest leagues in Europe were level on points at the top after eight games, while another club up to six points behind had won its last two league games. The leagues are in different countries, but the race works the same way in each: every club plays every other club home and away, and the club with the most points at the end wins. We found nine such seasons since 1997, three in England, two each in Italy, France and Spain. The champions won the league again in three. (The Guardian; The Guardian)
