How this resolves

The market resolves on the official final leaderboard on theopen.com after the final round on 19 July 2026, or a Monday finish if the R&A extends play. British means representing England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland on that leaderboard; players from the Republic of Ireland do not count. If that source has not published in time, BBC Sport and Sky Sports settle it.

The pattern behind it

Too few cases
None of the ten Opens played at Royal Birkdale since 1954 has been won by a British player, and ten is the full record at the venue. The near-misses run the other way: Justin Rose tied fourth as a 17-year-old amateur in 1998, Ian Poulter was second in 2008 and Rory McIlroy shared fourth in 2017. Five case rows are shown, below the six Hunch requires to display History.

All ten Opens at Birkdale went to players from abroad. Royal Birkdale has hosted the Open ten times since 1954. Even so, each of the last three put a British player in the top five. The newest come first. The 2025 Open at Portrush is shown as the most recent Open, and it is not one of the ten at Birkdale.
