History. No count from the cases: the wording about later steps was not recorded. This question comes from what the members who want a rise are pushing for. The checker compares Hunch with the page base of 5 of 6.
Hunch. The September summary said only that the right level of rates would depend on how big and how long the energy shock is, which is the kind of open wording that would resolve this NO.
The wording market resolves on the text of the Monetary Policy Summary of 5 November 2026, which speaks for the committee as a whole: YES if it says Bank Rate may need to rise further, in words such as further tightening or further increases may be required. Words in the statements of single members, or neutral wording about watching the data, resolve NO.
We looked for cases where the Bank of England kept its rate the same while some members voted for a rise, inflation was above target, and before the next meeting markets put the chance of a rise at 80% or more. We found six since 1997. In five the Bank raised its rate at the next meeting. All six were decided by the same committee, so this is the record of one institution.
