In the first round on 4 October 2026 Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of Lula, 47.03% to 45.16% of valid votes, so Lula had no lead; the electoral court's results page could not be read directly, so BBC News and Al Jazeera settle it.
Hunch. Every gap in the record was 10 points or wider and had room to close, while this one is 3 points and can widen as easily, and Lula's payment rise only reaches households on 19 October, after the first round.
The gap market resolves on the valid-vote percentages for president that Brazil's electoral court, the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral, publishes on resultados.tse.jus.br on the night of 4 October 2026: YES if Lula's share minus Flavio Bolsonaro's share is less than 3.00 points, including any result where Flavio Bolsonaro finishes ahead, NO otherwise. If the court's site cannot be reached, the figures as reported by two of BBC News, Reuters and Al Jazeera settle it.
We looked at every Brazilian first round since Bolsa Familia became a national programme in 2003. That gives five elections, from 2006 to 2022. In each, we compared the gap between the top two in the last polls with the gap in the count. In four of the five, the count was closer than the polls.
