How this resolves

Resolves on ecb.co.uk. YES if Brydon Carse appears in the England men's squad for the third Rothesay Test as published on ecb.co.uk at any point up to the scheduled start of play on 9 September 2026, including as a late addition. A withdrawal for injury after being named still resolves YES; non-selection resolves NO. If that source has not published in time, Sky Sports and BBC Sport settle it.

The pattern behind it

3 of 8
Three of the last eight England players stood down mid-inquiry were back inside four weeks: Archer in 2020, Stokes and Atkinson in 2026. The dividing line is who holds the file. The three quick returns were breaches of the team's own rules, dealt with by an ECB hearing within days. The five slow ones, Stokes and Hales in 2017, Duckett in 2017, Hales in 2019 and Robinson in 2021, each had an outside process running: police, the drugs policy or the Cricket Discipline Commission. Carse's case has been referred to the Cricket Regulator, and the police element ended in a de-arrest with no public account.

We looked at every time since 2017 that the ECB, as the players' employer, took a player out of an England or England Lions squad while an inquiry into his conduct was still open. The inquiry could be the ECB's own, the Cricket Discipline Commission's, the Cricket Regulator's or the police's. Injuries, rest, normal selection and bans after a finished process are left out. We asked whether the player played for England, or the Lions, within four weeks. We found eight cases. Two pairs, Stokes and Hales in 2017 and Stokes and Atkinson in 2026, were single decisions.
