Neither the Cricket Regulator nor the ECB published a charge, a sanction, a clearance or a closure before the 9 September deadline. Derbyshire Police confirmed on 26 August that it was still investigating allegations of assault with no arrests made, and the case was still open when the Edgbaston Test began.
Resolves on ecb.co.uk. YES on a published statement from the Cricket Regulator or the ECB confirming a charge, a sanction, a clearance or the closure of the case, issued before 11:00 BST on 9 September 2026. A statement saying only that the investigation continues resolves NO. If that source has not published in time, Sky Sports and BBC Sport settle it.
We looked at every time since 2017 that the ECB, as the players' employer, took a player out of an England or England Lions squad while an inquiry into his conduct was still open. The inquiry could be the ECB's own, the Cricket Discipline Commission's, the Cricket Regulator's or the police's. Injuries, rest, normal selection and bans after a finished process are left out. We asked whether the player played for England, or the Lions, within four weeks. We found eight cases. Two pairs, Stokes and Hales in 2017 and Stokes and Atkinson in 2026, were single decisions.
