How this resolves

The vote market resolves on the Monetary Policy Summary and minutes published by the Bank of England at midday on 17 September 2026, counting the members recorded as voting for any increase in Bank Rate. Four or more resolves YES, three or fewer resolves NO, and a vacant seat or an abstention counts against YES. The Guardian and BBC News reports of the decision settle it if the Bank's page is down.

The pattern behind it

5 of 8
Five of the last eight governor warnings were followed by a higher core CPI rate in the next release: March 2026 (3.1 to 3.2), August 2025 (3.7 to 3.8), February 2025 (3.2 to 3.7), August 2022 (5.8 to 6.2) and May 2022 (5.7 to 6.2). The three failures are the three most recent, June 2026 (2.6 to 2.6), April 2026 (3.1 to 2.5) and September 2025 (3.6 to 3.5). Adding the ninth case, the rise of 3 February 2022 that was followed by core going from 4.2 to 4.4 per cent, the full record since January 2022 is six of nine. Measured on headline CPI instead, the same eight warnings hold only three times.

We found nine such warnings since January 2022. Each time the governor of the Bank of England said UK inflation would rise, or that the risks pointed up, at the press conference after a rate decision or in evidence to the Treasury Committee. For each one we checked the next official inflation figures. Did core inflation, which leaves out energy and food, go up? The last eight are shown here.
