Why these numbers

History. 2 of 5: Bihar after 35 days and West Bengal after 71 days, both from the same court. The cases measure challenges to the removal itself; the current petitions ask for an inquiry into Kumar's decisions.

Hunch. The petitions heard on 5 October ask for an inquiry into Gyanesh Kumar's decisions rather than new rules for voter lists, and the court backed the Bihar review in May.

How this resolves

The rules market resolves on Supreme Court orders on sci.gov.in in the case where notices went out on 5 October: YES if a written order by 18 December tells the Election Commission to publish removed names with reasons, accept an extra document, keep an extra list or restore named people. Notices, requests to reply or to consider, and delays resolve NO, with The Guardian and BBC News as the backup.

The pattern behind it

0 of 5
In none of five court fights did the top court stop the removal itself. Twice it changed the rules for removed voters, and three times it ended up backing the body that runs the lists.

We looked for cases where a country's highest court heard a challenge to a mass removal of voters that was already under way. We found five since 2017: one in the United States, one in Ghana and three in India, all three before the same Indian court since July 2025.
