Democrat Amy Acton won the Ohio governor race of 3 November 2026 with the most votes, 2,350,266 (51.95%) to Vivek Ramaswamy's 2,023,379 (44.73%) with 97% counted in the AP data shown by The Guardian, and Ramaswamy conceded, as BBC News and The Guardian report; the Ohio Secretary of State results site returns 403.
History. 9 of 10: the president's party kept the job every time except Michigan in 1982. In Georgia 1966 the legislature chose the winner.
Hunch. Amy Acton has moved from a tie in June to a four-point lead in the New York Times and Siena poll (The Independent, 5 Oct).
Resolves on the unofficial results of the Ohio Secretary of State, checked at 12:00 Ohio time on 4 November 2026: YES if Vivek Ramaswamy has the most votes for governor, NO if Amy Acton or another candidate does. The Guardian and BBC News are the backup, and if no result is announced by the end of 4 November the market waits for the state's count.
We looked for cases where the president's party defended an open governor's seat in the middle of the president's term, with a candidate who had never won an election, in a state where the other party had not won the job for at least 20 years. We found ten, from 1922 to 1982. Eight of them were in the South and Oklahoma, where one party ruled for decades. Ohio has two strong parties.
