The Budget was fixed for 28 October: by 22 August The Observer was reporting on the Chancellor's banking dilemma ahead of the October Budget, and on 25 August the BBC covered the Prime Minister refusing to rule out tax rises in it.

How this resolves

Resolves YES if HM Treasury or the Chancellor states, on gov.uk or in a Commons statement on or before 31 August 2026, that the 2026 Budget will be held in October. Press reports of an expected month do not resolve YES on their own; two whitelisted reports of a confirmed date do.

The pattern behind it

4 of 5
Four of the last five autumn fiscal events that followed a summer warning on the public finances raised taxes. Five cases on the page, five in the record since 2021. The exception is 2023, when falling inflation bought Hunt room to cut national insurance instead.

We looked at summer warnings on the UK's public finances since 2021. Each was a report from the OBR or a Treasury review of spending saying the finances were on a path that could not last. We asked whether the next Budget or Statement raised taxes, the question the first market asks about this year. The OBR has published a summer risks report in most years since 2017, and each one warned about long-term debt. The recent record leans one way, but not every year.
