Why these numbers

Hunch. The two closest cases, both provincial courts, took 371 and 385 days, and a jury trial adds an appeal against the order that none of the five had, so this case is more likely to run slow than the record.

How this resolves

The trial market resolves YES if the Madrid Provincial Court opens the jury trial of Begoña Gómez on or before 22 August 2027, as shown in a court note on poderjudicial.es (TSJ Madrid news). If the court site is silent, reports by two of Reuters, BBC News, the Guardian and Politico Europe settle it.

The pattern behind it

2 of 5
Two of five. The Supreme Court tried the attorney general 55 days after his order and the National Court tried Rodrigo Rato after 238. Princess Cristina waited 385 days, David Sánchez 371 and Gürtel 579.

In Spain the wait for a trial depends mostly on the court. We looked at high-profile political cases in which a judge sent the case to trial, and counted the days until the trial opened. Our sources give both dates for eight cases, and five are close enough to compare. The two closest, heard by provincial courts like this one, both took just over a year. The two fast ones were tried by national courts: the Supreme Court, which has no queue, and the National Court. This trial will be the only one of them heard by a jury, and jury rules let the defence appeal the order itself, a step none of the five cases had.
