Resolved: NO

La Bola Negra, by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, won the Toronto People's Choice Award announced on 20 September 2026, but it did not premiere in Toronto: Variety records it as "world premiering in Cannes this year", where it won best director, and the Guardian dates that premiere to May 2026, before Netflix bought the rights.

How this resolves

The market resolves on TIFF's award announcement on tiff.net on 20 September 2026 names the People's Choice winner, and TIFF's programme entry for that film states its premiere status; resolves YES only if the entry says World Premiere. Films that premiered earlier at Venice, Telluride or elsewhere resolve NO. If that source has not published in time, Variety and Deadline reports of the award, which state where the winner premiered settle it.

The pattern behind it

5 of 8
Five of the last eight TIFF People's Choice winners had their world premiere in Toronto: Green Book in 2018, Jojo Rabbit in 2019, The Fabelmans in 2022, American Fiction in 2023 and The Life of Chuck in 2024. The three that did not, Nomadland in 2020, Belfast in 2021 and Hamnet in 2025, had premiered at Venice or Telluride. Eight festivals, 2018 to 2025, are the full record checked.

We looked at the last eight People's Choice winners and where each had its first screening, using trade and newspaper reports of the award. Five were first shown in Toronto. The other three came from Venice or Telluride.
