Resolved: NO

Neither the US Trade Representative press releases nor the Government of Canada news feed up to 8 October 2026 confirm restarted formal talks, and BBC News reported on 29 September that trade talks remained on ice.

How this resolves

The talks market resolves YES if both governments confirm that formal negotiations have restarted, in a statement from Canada's trade ministry or the Office of the US Trade Representative published by 8 October. Contact between officials short of resumed negotiations resolves NO, and if neither government publishes, Politico, the Financial Times and Reuters settle it.

The pattern behind it

5 of 8
Five of the last eight US import restrictions on an allied economy drew a retaliatory announcement from the target within 30 days: Canada in 2018, 2020, 2025 and August 2026, and the European Union in March 2025. Four of those five came within three days. The three that did not follow the pattern each had a reason: Mexico traded a border deal for a pause in 2025, the EU was waiting for its own WTO award in 2019, and Canada treated the 2017 lumber duties as a legal case rather than a trade fight. Ottawa's position today looks closer to the first group than the second, but its stated strategy of building at home rather than escalating points the other way.

We looked at every time since 2017 that the US government put a new import limit on a treaty ally or close trading partner, and at what the target government did in the next 30 days. We found eight. Canada is the target in five of them.
