Why these numbers

Hunch. The US embassy in Pretoria called this policy the first step in a series of escalating measures, a promise none of the seven closed cases carried, which lifts the estimate above the five-in-seven base.

How this resolves

This market resolves on the State Department's South Africa page and press releases at state.gov and on OFAC recent actions at ofac.treasury.gov, read on 16 December 2026. It resolves YES if, between 17 September and 15 December 2026, either publishes visa bans on named or further South Africans or a sanctions designation of a South African person; the 15 September policy itself and press reports of individual visa refusals that the US has not announced do not count, and Reuters plus BBC News are the fallback.

The pattern behind it

1 of 8
One of the last eight countries hit with US visa bans on officials struck back within 31 days, 13 per cent. China barred US staff over Tibet. Brazil, Haiti, Colombia and Nicaragua protested but barred no Americans.

We looked at every country whose officials the US State Department put under a public visa ban since January 2025, when Marco Rubio took office. We asked whether that country barred US officials or expelled a US diplomat within 31 days. The eight most recent cases are below. The same US team decided all eight, and Brazil appears three times and Haiti twice. The one country that hit back, China, did so under its 2021 law against foreign sanctions, a tool South Africa does not have.
