Why these numbers

History. 1 of 5. In five past UK cases where sellers had to show prices, a later official review found lower prices once: funerals, where the CMA said the pandemic was part of the reason.

Hunch.

  • For: Vet price growth fell from 7.4% in August 2025 to 4.8% in August 2026.
  • For: The prescription fee is now limited to £21, where many practices charged £30 or more.
  • Against: Vet prices have risen faster than prices in general every month since September 2022.
  • Against: An independent vet told the BBC that fees for care are very likely to go up.
How this resolves

The vet prices market resolves on the ONS release of 15 September 2027: YES if the annual rate for veterinary and other services for pets (series L7SN) for August 2027 is lower than the annual rate for all consumer prices (series D7G7) for the same month, as first published. If the two are equal, or the vet rate is higher, it resolves NO; if the release moves, the first ONS publication of August 2027 figures settles it.

The pattern behind it

1 of 5
In 1 of 5 UK cases did a later official review report lower prices after an order that made sellers show prices but did not limit them.

We looked for cases where a UK competition regulator, after a long investigation, ordered sellers to show their prices and give buyers more information, but did not limit the main price. We found five since 2005, one of them for vets. In each case we asked two things. Did a later official review report that prices came down? Did anyone take the order to court?
