Why these numbers

History. 0 of 5. No one took any of the five past orders to court, including the 2005 order for vets.

Hunch.

  • For: The Progressive Veterinary Association threatened legal action in August over the ownership rules.
  • Against: The British Veterinary Association says most practices already work to the new rules.
  • Against: In the past cases no seller or group went to court over rules like these.
How this resolves

The tribunal market resolves on the Competition Appeal Tribunal's list of cases: YES if, by 30 November 2026, the Tribunal registers an application under section 179 of the Enterprise Act 2002 for review of either vets order the CMA made in 2026. A threat, a letter or a judicial review claim in another court does not count; the CMA case page and BBC News are the backup sources.

The pattern behind it

1 of 5
In 1 of 5 UK cases did a later official review report lower prices after an order that made sellers show prices but did not limit them.

We looked for cases where a UK competition regulator, after a long investigation, ordered sellers to show their prices and give buyers more information, but did not limit the main price. We found five since 2005, one of them for vets. In each case we asked two things. Did a later official review report that prices came down? Did anyone take the order to court?
